the music in our bodies sounds

through ears and lips and arms

expresses soul without pretense

mysteriously making sense

Jera Petriček was born in Slovenia, where she finished studies of French and Russian Languages and Literatures as well as Orchestral Conducting at the University of Ljubljana. Since 2011 she lives in Vienna, where she obtained her Master in Orchestral Conducting at the University of Music with Simeon Pironkoff in 2018. Additionally, Petriček has taken part in numerous masterclasses and taken conducting lessons from many teachers, including Johannes Schlaefli and Sian Edwards, with whom she studied Postgraduate Orchestra Conducting in 2025/26 at the University of Music in Vienna.

Besides conducting, Petriček is also an accomplished singer. She has stood on the stage of the Salzburg Summer Festival and sung in the chorus under the batons of Riccardo Muti and Mariss Jansons among others. She also sung in Arnold-Schoenberg-Chor with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Thomas Guggeis in Vienna. Petriček acted as assistant choir master at the Chorus Academy of the Vienna State Opera as well as the Arnold-Schoenberg-Chor.

In 2017, Petriček started the Slovenian Chamber Orchestra Vienna to promote Slovenian composers and connect students of music with established orchestral players. Since 2021 Petriček has been pursuing PhD studies in historical musicology with Melanie Unseld, writing a thesis entitled “Conductor Gertrud Herliczka – the Viennese Traces of an International Career”. Since the opening night in January 2022 Petriček has been conducting the prize-winning theatre play humanistää! at the Vienna Volkstheater.

Since 2023 Petriček has been employed full-time at the Vienna State Opera as Maestra Suggeritrice. In this capacity, Petriček prompts singers in numerous languages (French, Russian, German, Czech, Italian and English) as well as conducts them during scenic rehearsals and performances. In past two seasons, Petriček collaborated on twenty-five operas, from contemporary works to classics like Tosca, Carmen, Mozartʼs Da Ponte cycle and Tannhäuser. As Maestra Suggeritrice, Petriček substantially contributes to achieving the precision of the unity of orchestral playing with the singing on the stage as well as supports each singer individually. During rehearsals for the first performance of the contemporary opera Animal Farm by Alexander Raskatov in February 2024, Petriček was acting as assistant to the conductor Alexander Soddy, and in November 2024 she took over leading the stage orchestra of the Vienna State Opera for the ballet A Winter’s Tale.

Jera Petriček has been invited as a guest conductor to major Slovenian orchestras, the Vienna Volkstheater as well as several orchestras in Vienna. Since February 2025 she is represented by InArt Management.

Wiener Staatsoper

my season 24/25

Every evening before the first show of a series I make a photo of the official opera poster, as a cherished memory and also because it has my name on it in small print at the bottom. The photos reflect the different lengths of day we have in Vienna, and sometimes there are people behind me, trying to look at the poster as well. I am very happy to work with so many inspiring conductors and singers, as well as our fabulous pianists!

Wiener Staatsoper

my first season 23/24

Mannheimer Morgen, 14.5.2022
